What is a Material Lift?

Updated: Jan 10, 2022

If you have not heard the term ‘Material Lift’, not to worry because you are not alone.

The Material Lift is a permitted elevating device under the ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Elevator codes of North America that allows for the vertical transport of freight between fixed levels when the travel height does not exceed 5,000mm (7,600mm in ON & AB) and which only authorized freight handlers are permitted to ride.

When should you consider a Material Lift?

Do you need to move heavy cargo from one floor to the next? Do you have heavy pallets or carts or other material that cannot be moved up or down stairs? Do you need a convenient means to access storage? If you have answered yes to any of these questions then you should consider a material lift.

Many new clients are surprised when introduced to such a device that is as safe and reliable as a Freight Elevator, but at a fraction of the cost! However, there are some things to consider:

Because Material lifts serve a specific function and are not considered passenger elevators, they must not be accessible to general public.

Load sizes can vary considerably so the cab/platform size is unrestricted and load ratings are classified as A, B or C. There is no limit to the weight capacity as well. Whether your loads are 100lb, or 20,000lb a Material Lift will do the job.

With no requirements for cab gates or a ceiling, minimal pit depth and lenient rules regarding hoistway enclosure and machine rooms, Material Lifts provide a economical alternative to other freight handling devices without sacrificing safety, efficiency or reliability.

Why you should consider a Bramalea Elevator Material Lift?

Our Material Lift, as with all our products, set the industry standard. Bramalea is the safe, reliable and smart choice for all freight handling elevators and here’s why:

  • Our lifts are capable of weight capacities ranging from 100 lbs to over 30,000 lbs.

  • We provide Fire rated UL/ULC labeled doors to satisfy building code fire requirements.

  • We provide an in-car operating panel as well as control panels at each landing (so the elevator can be controlled from outside the cab).

  • We can customize the size of the platform to suit the needs of the project.

  • We have special design criteria when pit depth is not an option or overhead space is severely limited.

  • Our hydraulic coupled design offers a smooth and quiet ride.

  • Civil construction can be eliminated all together if a Bramalea Elevator Free Standing Material Lift unit is used (click here for more information).

  • Installation is provided by professional, licensed elevator mechanics.

  • Our Material lifts, as with all our products, exceed the national code standards and the price is the most competitive on the market today.
