Featured Installations
We have highlighted some of our most notable installations in our showcase
section. For each of the installation listed, there were some specific
site constraints or other client requirements, which required custom designs.
We enjoy custom design challenges, as they give us an opportunity to
create something new. This has been the driving force for our design engineers.
There is definitely more hard work involved in creating a new design,
but in the end the satisfaction of doing a worthy job is much more.

A scissors lift was being used for vertical lifting of goods. As travel
was more than two meters, use of scissors for this application was not
in line with elevator codes. Therefore it had to be replaced with a
material lift.
It was a design challenge to provide a material lift in the existing
hoistway due to its very tight width. A special cantilever design with
tight clearances to maximize the platform size provided the right solution
for this situation.
Bolting through the wall with steel channel for bracing was used to
support the guide rails and cylinder to the existing masonry wall.
Due to lack of space in this existing facility a dedicated masonry machine
room could not be provided. To overcome this obstacle a lockable enclosure
for machine room and lift controller was provided.
Equipment installed at The Old Mill, Toronto is from our block mounted
B1000 series (BT1000). Some other notable installations from this model
range are:
- Bondhead Golf Club, Bondhead
- Rainbow Foods, Ottawa
- Whole Foods, Toronto
- Factory Shoe, Kitchener
- Effem Foods, Newmarket
- Cineplex Odeon, Markham
- Canadian Self Storage, Toronto

- The Panasonic Theatre, Toronto (3000 lb cantilevered
block wall mounted material lift):

This installation involved linking the stage level of the theatre with
grade and basement levels below. A fire rated weatherproof door was
provided at the grade level, as it opened to an exterior laneway.
Door at the stage and grade level are double section swing type. As
there was not enough room at basement level, a single section swing
door was provided.
This material lift is a single section cantilever design from our BT3000
series.

This job has a long travel distance of 10.36 m (34’) linking four
levels of the parts centre. Travel for material lifts is restricted
to a maximum of 5 meters (16’ – 4”). However, under
a director’s ruling, material lifts over five meters are also
permitted in Ontario, provided certain changes are made to the lift
equipment.
With the use of an environment friendly non-buried two-stage cylinder
and a deep pit, we provided a material lift for this situation. This
brought substantial cost savings to the customer, money they would have
otherwise spent one a freight elevator. This design is from our BL3000
series. Some other installations from the same series are:
- Toyota – Lexus, Scarborough
- Shoppers Drug Mart, Barrie & Beamsville
- OPP Dist. HQ, Mount Forest
- Royal Military College, Kingston
- Future Shop, Toronto
- Ontario Food Terminal, Toronto
- Novopharm, Markham
- Patheon Inc., Mississauga

- WorldCom MCI, Toronto (10,000 lb dual cylinder
block wall mounted material lift):

Dual cylinders provide load capacity of 10,000 lb for this lift. With
travel of 7 meter, this lift serves three floors penetrating 2 floors.
As travel for this lift is over 5 meter, design has to be made as per
the director ruling for lifts over 5 meters.
Another unique aspect of this job was the presence of habitable space
below the hoistway shaft. For this reason, spring buffers of adequate
load bearing capacity were provided in the lift pit.

- Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto (15,000 lb dual
cylinder block wall mounted material lift):

This situation involved providing a 15,000 lb load capacity material
lift between two levels. There was a staircase with minimum recommended
width (due to building code) adjoining the lift hoistway shaft. This
affected the hoistway and clear cab width. To maximize the cab width
we came up with a unique design with less clearance between the rails
and the cab. For installation, the sling and other major lift structure
were lowered into the hoistway shaft from the top of hoistway.
The previous two installations are part of our BT & BL 10000 family.
Some other benchmark installations from BT, BL 5000 & 10000 family
are:
- The Brick, Mississauga. 4000lb
- Price Chopper, Scarborough. 8000 lb
- Black Creek Storage Facility, Brampton.
4500 lb
- Commisso Plaza, Beamsville. 5000 lb
- Apotex Pharmaceuticals, Brantford. 6000
lb with Peelle vertical bi-parting doors

This is a true turnkey installation. A free standing self support hoistway
structure and enclosure is provided to support the material lift.
This material lifts connects the lower and upper storage levels of the
store. Storage and racking area of the store is steel fabricated and
there is no masonry block construction. As no masonry hoistway shaft
or machine room construction is required for the lift, it makes it highly
suitable for this situation.
Further, this is a No Pit installation and, therefore, does not require
cutting of lower level concrete floor to make a lift pit.
Delivery of the lift is extremely critical, as it has to synchronize
with the racking contractor for the store. This puts additional responsibility
on us for all Canadian Tire projects.
A lift with support structure can be substantially fabricated in our
shop. The structure is shipped as four walls with other bracing members.
This approach greatly reduces installation time and, as a result, installation
can be achieved with in two days.

- Library Service Centre, Kitchener (3,000 lb
cantilevered free standing material lift):

This customer had an existing unoccupied mezzanine. Due to an increase
in business volume, they wanted to make their mezzanine operational.
For this, they required a lift to carry up to 3000 lb of load between
lower level and mezzanine. However, they were looking for one agency
to provide single window service including an elevator, the hoistway
shaft and machine room.
Our freestanding material lift became the right candidate for this situation.
We provided a 3000 lb material lift with double section mesh swings
doors. No cutting of floor was required as it was a No Pit Material
Lift. A steel ramp was provided to taper the lowered platform height
of 50 mm (2”). Lockable enclosure for power pack and controller
replaced a masonry machine room.
Some other notable turnkey jobs:
- Toronto District School Board, Toronto
- Effem Foods, Newmarket
- Goodrich Landing Gear, Oakville
- Novex Pharma, Richmond Hill

- Xerox, Mississauga, Ontario (6,000 lb dual
cylinder free standing material lift):

This is a turnkey No Pit required installation. This involved a 6000
lb material lift supported by dual hydraulic cylinders (one on each
side) with freestanding self-support hoistway structure.
There was an existing floor at the bottom landing. Therefore a “No
Pit Required” lift was installed. This saved the customer from
cutting of existing floor slab and re-pouring a new concrete pit to
make a lift pit.
Another unique aspect for this lift was that the ambient conditions
required explosion proof lift equipment. An intrinsic safe lift controller
was provided to fulfill this requirement. This equipment is part of
FL 5000 series involving use of dual cylinders.
Some other notable explosion proof installations are:
- Patheon Inc, Mississauga:
(a pharmaceutical plant) an intrinsic safe lift controller with
a supply of pressurized air line into the machine room was provided
to ensure explosion proof environment for the machine room.

installation.
- PPG Oakville: (paint &
abrasives plant) this is freestanding material lift with No Pit
Design. Single section swing doors guard both upper and lower lift
landings. Special requirements of this installation include a lift
controller that is housed in a steel cage to make it explosion proof.

- Adams Foods, Scarborough (12,000 lb dual cylinders
wall mounted freight elevator):

This job involved 35’ of vertical travel going three floors. Goods
were placed on a skid and a forklift truck is used to load/unload the
skid into the elevator. Load capacity of the elevator is 12,000 lb.
Vertical bi-parting hoistway doors with a vertical slide-up car gate
guard the lift entrance.
As travel and load capacities for the elevator were on the higher side,
it required use of additional set of dedicated guide rails to support
the cylinders, along with the guide rails to transmit motion. Dual cylinders
one on each side support the lift cab.

- Sears, Regina (6,000 lb dual
cylinder free standing freight elevator):

Here to view an illustration depicting this installation.
This job required a turnkey vertical transport solution. Therefore,
a freight elevator with a self-support freestanding hoistway structure
was provided.
Dual cylinders provided a 6000 lb load capacity to the lift. This is
a unique product mix offered by Bramalea Elevator Ltd. where tubular
steel construction is used to make hoistway structure. Four hollow tubes
serve as the four corners of the structure. The corners are joined by
cross members. Solid or mesh sheet steel is used to enclose the structure.
The machine room is steel mesh and frame type. A self-closing self-locking
metal door guards it.

- Concord Adex, Toronto (No Pit
required Vertical Platform Lift):
- Since it was an existing building, it was not possible to cut the
concrete floor to make a pit. A No Pit Handicapped lift was the right
solution for this situation. This building houses doctor and other medical-related
offices and is now equipped with a handicapped lift to carry a person
in a wheelchair with an attendant.
A 24” long steel ramp tapers the 2” lowered platform height
at the lower landing.

- Tait McKenzie Fitness Centre,
University of York (2500 lb load capacity Vertical Platform Lift):

Here to view a slide show depicting this installation.
Typically, vertical platform lifts (handicapped lifts) are rated at
1000 lb load capacity. In this installation customer had a special requirement
of 2500 lb load carrying capacity and it became a special assignment
for Bramalea Elevator Ltd. This one of a kind handicapped lift in Ontario
is designed with 2500 lb load capacity that conveniently and safely
carries people in wheelchairs, heavy handicapped scooters, etc.

- Ultima Condominium, Toronto
(non-corrosive cab for a handicapped lift):

This handicapped lift is installed on the swimming pool side linking
the pool floor to the observatory level above. Steamy and humid conditions
of pool required non-corrosive cab and door finish. Contemporary interiors
of the building demanded an equally fitting superior lift finishes.
Keeping this in mind, we provided special imported hoistway doors with
stainless steel frame and frosted tempered glass. The cab walls and
the ceiling were also custom-ordered, as the interior designer requested.

- Quality Cheese, Vaughan (2000
lb cantilever material lift):
- Click
Here to view a slide show depicting this installation.
Since this was an operational cheese manufacturing facility, the customer
was not inclined to making a masonry hoistway shaft. Instead two hollow
structural tubes were provided, and rails brackets were welded to these
tubes. Hoistway was enclosed by suitable fire rated material.
Health and hygiene standards of this plant require water spraying and
thorough cleaning on a weekly basis. Therefore, the cab platform, other
cab items, structural hollow tubes to support the guide rails and pit
steel were all galvanized. All pit electrical components used were fire
rated. This was a truly unique installation.

- MDS Pathological Laboratory
Inc., Etobicoke (stainless steel finish dumbwaiter):
- Click
Here to view a slide show depicting this installation.
This job had an existing cut out in the upper floor. Therefore, it required
a dumbwaiter to suit the existing opening with a fire rated enclosure.
We proposed a dumbwaiter with an angle tower. The angle supports the
rails of the dumbwaiter and also provides a framework for dry wall enclosure.
